Leonard Bernstein's Mass Revisited

I was going through boxes tonight looking for some old CDs. I found CD recording of Leonard Bernstein Mass. In 1988 I performed this piece with Indian University at Tanglewood in honor of his 70th birthday with Bernstein in the audience. He came up on stage afterward and was so happy and appreciative. It was a college highlight for me. And my family was in attendence. Mom went up to Bernstein afterward and got our programs autographed. He had a cigarette in one hand, a drink in the other.

I listened to the entire piece again tonight. I had forgotten what a great impact this piece has/had on my life. It might not be the greatest piece of music but it still today had a strong emotional response and impact on me. I think it’s something you only get by studying and performing a piece of music. It’s such a blessing to be able to do that.

On this listen I also thought a lot about my kids and am excited to see what musical masterpieces impact them as they continue to perform.

Happy thoughts.
